For almost three years, I was a fairly regular--albeit lazy--beauty blogger. Since my husband has been home, I have just been busy. I have been throwing my limited (limited, but growing) energy into other pursuits, and blogging has been the last thing on my mind.

Here are a few things I have been loving. I haven't been voraciously researching new makeup, but sticking with the products and brands I love. I am steadily trying to go more natural in all my body and skin products, but it's slow going sometimes!

FACE

Whenever I get to visit the outlet mall about a half hour from where I live, I always have to pop into the Cosmetics Company Store. I see to be drawn to some new Bobbi Brown product every time I go in. A couple of months ago, my husband talked me into buying this. I kept waffling about it, but he knows he reluctant I am to make purchases sometimes.

Bobbi Brown EXTRA Repair Foundation

Now, my skin is extremely combination. Many things make my skin feel slick during the day. However, when I keep it well moisturized in the morning, it tends to balance itself out. My favorite product to moisturize with is Bobbi Brown EXTRA Face Oil that I bought before my wedding last year (to layer under an oil free foundation with zero SPF.) My second favorite would be pure aloe vera gel. Anyways, I do have to give a quick dusting of silica powder on my T-zone after using this, but I LOVE the smell and the sheer coverage.

EYES

Secondly, I am finally able to line under my eyes with a pencil liner. It's a miracle!! I simply dust a little powder around my eye, and use Urban Decay Primer Potion (UDPP for short!) on the places I want to line. I have been using CoverGirl LiquidLine Blast eye pencil in Blackest Black. Properly prepped, it stays on great. When I don't want to deal with ANY smudging, I go to my trusty Bobbi Brown gel liner.

HAIR

No, I did not do my hair myself here! Yeah, right. About a month after this, I chopped about four inches off of my hair. My obsession with achieving ombre hair last summer has grown out beautifully, yet has taken a toll on the health of my hair. I use a Pantene leave-in conditioner every time I wash my hair, and religiously use MorrocanOil. I also still don't use heat anywhere but my bangs, except on rare occasions.

Well, that's about all the blogging I have in me right now. I'll try to give product reviews here and there, so it doesn't go so long!

The Little Guys

First of all, thank you to all who have left me sweet comments on my purse. I am truly such a bad blogger. I refuse to feel bad about it when I have other things taking up my time and energy. However, I definitely have some products and skin care things I'm dying to share.

In the meantime...

In a product market full of new shellac, rockstar or other super long wearing nail treatments, I have a plain old manicure that went the distance. I got a mani/pedi at a great little place close to my house. I went the day before Valentine's Day--little treat since I was excited to start wearing this ring on the 14th.

Well, the last three manicures I've gotten (spaced out over five months since i usually do my own), they have used OPI Bond Aid as a nail prep. I'm not sure why the combination of everything worked so well this time. Could it be Bond Aid? I wish I knew. I picked out OPI On Collins Ave. Good thing I love the color.

New Purse

I have been perfectly content with my Kenneth Cole purse I scored for $20 on eBay last year at this time. Soft leather, perfect size, handle options.

However, I walked into TJ Maxx the other day, and fell in love with this blush pink beauty.

Curl Serum

It's been a while since I've raved about a new product. Lately, I've had criticisms for every product I've tried. Last winter through summer, Moroccan Oil could do not wrong for me--no greasiness, increased shine the longer you use it and very softening. However, this fall, with all of my color changes, I've needed a bit more. I've been dissatisfied with all of my wave products since the lightening of my hair changed its texture.

I happened upon this curling serum in TJ Maxx. For $4, I figured it was worth a shot--a defrizzer, conditioner and curl aid in one. Yes, please! I've used it three times now and I love it. It is everything I need right now. I've looked up reviews and apparently I am alone in my rave.

Ombre hair

If you have been reading my blog for some time, you might remember when my obsession with ombre hair began last spring. After dyeing my hair darker than my natural color using demi permanent color for years, I took the plunge with messy highlights. From there, I had a reddish brown put on my roots to blend the grown out look. About a month after that, I I had more highlights put in on the under layers so that there wasn't so much left over of the almost black color I favored for so long.

Since then, I have made a few trips to Sally's beauty supply and read up a bit more online. Part of me just wants to put a light brown gloss over the whole thing, and part of me figures after spending quite a chunk of money to get it here, I should just continue dyeing my little gray roots that grow in.

Hair Dilemmas

Well, readers, I have the urge to blog for the first time in A WHILE! Also, this is my first post from my Christmas iPad. The only beauty product I have purchased in months is a Kiehl's tinted moisturizer (more on that later.)

To catch up, I've been wearing mostly comfy yoga attire and wearing minimal jewelry. I am a big fan of "less is more" and I lazily enough have been adapting that as my motto. My favorite way to dress is still plain (plain, but well fitting) classics, updating with seasonal accessories.

My biggest annoyance right now is my hair. Grrrr, growing out my bangs has been so annoying. I have been lazy most days, but some days playing around with hot tools and various products. I had the same hair for years, and the change has really thrown me. My ombre hair color is still growing into its own, but it has made my hair must less silky. It's still very healthy, but...different. I have regretted putting so much color in a few times, but need to enjoy it since it's almost to what I had planned originally.

My plan is to do a demi permanent tint on my hair to give a bit more of a caramel color. Once my bangs get this long, I might end up chopping them...but I've come too far to stop now!

Nutra Sonic

So, my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas. Since he is gone, it's up to me to get it for myself. I couldn't really think of anything. Then, was browsing the Costco website and saw they had a Nutra Sonic cleansing brush--including the cleanser, toner and three brush heads. I had never heard of the Nutra Sonic, but have been longing for a Clarisonic for a couple of years now. I began voraciously reading reviews, as I am known to do. I could never justify $200 for a sonic brush, but $95 as a gift during a deployment...hmmm. Plus, buying from Costco is always satisfaction guaranteed. You cannot beat their return policy should anything be wrong with it down the road either.

So, I went for it. Gulp, still extravagant But, WOW. This thing is amazing!!! My skin has never felt so soft, smooth and glowing. I have only been using it for three days, twice a day. I have been using the sensitive brush head on the lowest setting since my skin can get irritated. I'll keep you posted on the long term effects, but it's supposed to fight aging and acne. It gets my face crazy clean, and products penetrate the skin much more effectively.

I can take it in the shower with me, and it has a body attachment as well. I haven't used it yet, but look forward to trying it out.

The brush heads need to be changed every 3-4 months, depending on use. The brushes are also about 40% less than the Clarisonic ones. The charger is universal voltage, just like the Clarisonic Plus. I have read that the instructions are much more extensive with the Clarisonic, but I'm fine getting info online and paying less than half the price!

HSN does sell a travel version--smaller and only two speeds. However, it is $44.95.

Goody Pony Pouf Review

I LOVED the Goody Spin Pin, as I raved about here. It is a great tool to have. So, I was excited to pick up the Good Pony Pouf Clip from Target a couple of weeks ago.

I have to say I was very disappointed. It has two clip sizes--one for fine and one for thick hair. I have fine hair, but a TON of it. Seriously, anyone who does my hair comments on how much hair I have. My ponytails are thick, and the larger size of this barely fits my mop.

I love the idea of poufing up a simple pony for a different look, but don't want to tease or backcomb too much as my fine hair tends to tangle. The only easy way to explain why this does not work for me is to say that the slivers used to grab the hair and pouf it are only on one side. Unfortunately, to use this right side up, it won't close around my fat ponytail. I can get it to close, upside down. That may not make sense unless you've seen one in person.

Has anyone had good luck with this product? Walmart is selling a set of Goody tools here.

I'm back! It's been a crazy few weeks, but I've still managed to make some discoveries about the good, bad and perfect products.

First of all, this:
L'Oreal Elnett hairspray

Are you expecting another rave review? Well, I happen to disagree with every magazine beauty editor who has ever pushed me to buy this! For YEARS, I have read about this "wonder product." It is not all that, you guys. No at all.

Let me disclaim a little first. I have only used the small size of the Extra Strong Hold, rather than the Strong Hold. The reason is that it takes me forever to go through a bottle of hairspray. My aerosol cans always clog up, so my last purchase was a travel size of Dove Soft Hold spray. It has done everything I wanted it to (just getting my bangs to stay where I want them to, with light hold.) My hair holds shape too well, so I don't need more spray on it. Plus, I don't like the crunchy feeling of hairspray all over my hair. I use Frederick Fekkai Glossing Spray for a light, shiny hold.

Why don't I like this? I have to say the biggest reason is the smell. It is awful, and seems to get worse the longer it's on. I am not normally too sensitive to smells, but this one is just very old lady like and musty. Yuck.

The second reason is that it's really sticky for something that is supposed to be brushable.

The third is that is bodifies my already full bodied hair. It seems to frizz and fatten it up.

This was a huge disappointment since I've followed its cult status for years--from the illegal ingredient that wasn't allowed in the US, to its arrival at Target last year.

Florida

So I'm leaving in the morning to visit a good friend in Florida. I'm definitely becoming a fan of distraction to make the time go by more quickly while Aaron is gone. Six more months! Haha, WAY too early for a countdown. With things so intense on the deployment front, I'm looking forward to the trip.

I many times find myself carrying a purse and a canvas tote. For someone with no kids, this is ridiculous. I was at Barnes'n'Noble and happened upon this AMAZING pocketed tote. Yes, please! I'm excited to break it in this trip. I love my little Kenneth Cole purse that is the perfect size and shape, but this the perfect canvas tote that can carry alot and maintain organization. Ahhhh.

Top Coats, Etc

Seche Vita, OPI, Barielle...I can't say I prefer one over the other. I have found that the stickier/thickier a top coat is, usually means a.) it takes longer to dry and b.) generally lasts longer.

Top coats among those brands seem to be equals in my experience, but two things that are not:

Sally Hansen strengthening coat (read my rave here, that stuff is strong)

I have been a bit behind on blog reading lately; I've just had so much going on. Plus, when I'm on the computer, I have been Skyping Aaron or emailing him, so then I'm ready to do something in the real world when I'm done.

However, a couple of months ago, I discovered The Vogue Diaries. I LOVE the pictures--the clothes, the makeup, the hair. Oh my. Check it out.

As a semi-related topic, I have been really over my bangs (and my hair in general.) The one thing keeping me excited about it is growing out my bangs and having fun with the center part. I'm over side swept, and into centered.

CoverGirl Liquidline Blast

I love when drugstore products surprise me with great quality for a cheap price. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with this eyeliner. I struggle with oily eyelids, and constantly smearing liner when I try to line my lower lids. Most of the time, I stick with a liquid liner up top (another drugstore fave, Almay liquid liner), or Bobbi Brown gel liner to do anything under my eyes. Sometimes, though, I want a bit more around my whole eye...connecting in the outer corners.

This lasts for a few hours without any smearing on me. It also comes with a nifty smudger on one end. Of course, when you smoke it out, the staying power decreases.

Still, a great buy and a fun new product. Also, it's good to know you can purchase makeup at CVS, Walgreens or Rite Aid and return should it not work for you. Takes the pressure off a bit.

Turban headscarf

I looked all summer for the right scarf to do this with. Well, let me amend that statement: Whenever I was in a clothing store, I looked for one. I have not had time to do much shopping this summer. I have been in housewife mode, and trying to squeeze in all time possible with Aaron before he leaves for seven months.

I still believe that cheap, fun accessories are the best update for any wardrobe. I definitely have fun with hair stuff.

I have had a very busy few weeks. I'm really trying to use any energy I have to spend time with my husband, and then rest when I get the chance. It's actually worked out really well.

While at my in-laws' up in northern CA last week, I was watching TV and saw a commercial for the Goody Spin Pin. I waited until Aaron came back and begged him to take me to a nearby drugstore. I got one of the last ones.

This is the most amazing invention I have seen in a long time. It takes the place of twenty bobby pins. My mass of hair can be spun into a bun so easily and without the usual claw clip digging into my scalp.

RUN to a drugstore and get one.

FYI, it's actually two pins. SO easy and holds so well. I have no more words to rave.

Perfect sunscreen achieved.

I have been searching for the right physical sunscreen for my face. I am slowly trying to eliminate the chemical ones from my arsenal.

I tried Dermalogica. I loved it, but it was too pricey. Also, I have since learned that it is high in toxicity.

I tried Neutrogena. WAY too greasy and yucky.

I tried California Baby--pure titanium dioxide and super waterproof. It is great for the body, but broke my face out in teeny bumps. Yuck.

I landed on one that is always raved about, but somehow I had never tried. It is not waterproof, but I simply apply my Bare Escentuals mineral powder sunscreen midday. This doubles as a primer, isn't at all greasy, is tinted to counterbalance the whiteness of physical sunscreens and is just altogether wonderful and really reasonable. LOVE it.

Some Product Disappointments

I'm sitting here listening to very nearby neighbors singing karaoke. Not pleasant when you aren't singing too, and don't know the people. They just finished Beatles "Yesterday."

Anyways, here are some products that I have been disappointed with.

This was very disappointing. I can't figure out if it was this or a new sunscreen I've been trying, but my face broke out into tiny bumps all over it. Also, it felt like pure silicone, and my pores felt suffocated. I have read so many rave reviews, but wasn't sold.

Wow, this was so chalky white and greasy. I have been wanting a waterproof, physical sunscreen. I thought the newer technologies prevented it from looking like the Zinc of older days. I got some samples of Dermalogica super sensitive suncreen, and loved it. All physical sunscreen with no chalkiness. Then again, it's $45. I read that they used microionized particles to avoid that chalkiness. I guess I'll stick with my Shiseido--with its super waterproof, chemical/physical SPF blend. I just have to be sure to remove it fully with a cleansing oil or wipe.

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation
It seems like every blog I read, someone raves about it. I was thinking it would be sheer. Nope. I like a very sheer coverage. I don't like looking like I have makeup on, I guess. This looked very makeup-y on me. Very matte on me. No likey.

Wedding Makeup

I knew right off the bat that I wanted to do my own wedding makeup. I am not that good at applying makeup, but I am pretty controlling about it. I wanted to look like myself, just a bit more dramatic for pictures. I went to the Bobbi Brown counter at Bloomingdale's at South Coast Plaza a week before, and had a tutorial. I learned some great tricks for photos, and it took her about ten lip shades to finally land on what we did. So helpful.

Bobbi Brown EXTRA Face Oil (a fragrant and wonder-working blend of jojoba and other oils. I was skeptical about using an oil, but it really evens out oiliness and dryness...amazing. Worth the pre-wedding splurge that I did instead of getting a massage!)

No SPF- it reflects light and makes your face look white

Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Compact in Natural Tan 4.25 (applied both with foundation brush and fingers to warm and blend)
Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzer in Bahama Brown (with a fluffy brush everywhere the sun hits your face naturally)
Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzer in Antigua for blush (wearing it lower than I usually do so it looked like a natural flush)
Bobbi Brown long wear eyeshadow in Stone (already had it!) across my eyelid and just doubled up at my crease
Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner (already had it) on upper eye only
She showed me how to dip a skinny brush in the Stone and then some darker brown eyeshadow to dab at my lower lashline to give soft definition with staying power
MAC Shroom heavily on my brow bone (I layered it over Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in Recess to help it stay put) and inner corners of my eyes
My normal Imju Fiberwig mascara, and curled eyelashes
Lips: MAC Prep&Prime lip primer, Bobbi Brown liner in Brownie Pink, then BB lip crayon in Warm Rose, topped off with BB glitter lip gloss in Naked

Phew, that's alot of steps. It really didn't take too long, and stayed really well despite the heat and swampy feel!

Hair Change

I have not been energetic enough to update my blog with anything that requires work. I know; I'm lazy. I have a few days to rest and recover from some busy and sickly weeks, though, so I'm excited.

Something huge is happening in my life tomorrow: I am highlighting my hair. It has been eight years since I have put anything lighter in my hair! I have been dyeing it darker for about six years, and just want change and also a way to blend in the ever-increasing gray.

I'm going for lighter, caramely highlights and not near the roots. It will be painted on to blend (by teasing the hair before applying the color.)

I picked. It ruined an otherwise precious picture. So, I fixed it.

Aaron officiated a wedding on base, and I tagged along. We walked around the ranch house area. Here is what I was wearing, along with MY NEW PURSE.

A Kenneth Cole handbag that retails for $250. It is practically brand new. It is buttery soft leather, the perfect size and shape. Best part? I got it for a steal on eBay for $19.99. I had been watching KC purses for a month or so, and most went for over $60. The seller posted a blurry, small picture of it and no one else bid on it. Woohoo!

I love getting $5 off Ulta coupons every month in my InStyle magazine. Seriously, I paid $5 for a year subscription through Amazon.

I love using these coupons once or twice a year to get three nail polishes. Ulta has "buy two, get one free" on OPI, Essie and China Glaze. With my coupon, I get three nail polishes for $11. Amazing, right?

I have always had a mild obsession with all things nautical. Mostly because I have had a major obsession with Jackie Kennedy since I was 12, and I would see pictures of her chic style sailing in Hyannis Port. Also, Jane Austen heroines sometimes love Navy officers. Fast forward to present, when I'm dating a Navy officer.

It seems like they never go out of style. Every spring, magazines scream that they're so in.

Trendy, Healthy Lips

If you read magazines at all, you know that hot pink lips are very in. They were last year as well, but much more mainstream this year.

I've gotten really tired of dried out lips and the bad taste of lipsticks...so I'm always pleased when I can find a tasty, moisturizing balm to do the same thing.

I picked this C.O. Bigelow Vitamin Mentha Poppy Pink Mint balm on sale right after Christmas at Bath and Body Works. It is the perfect touch of hot pink in a balm. Super trendy and yummy!

My second one I picked up in Golden Mint. It gives a warm sheen to any lipstick, stain or pencil I put on. My favorite is to slick on some nude rose liner and swipe this on over. I have a golden MAC lipstick that I have always used for this purpose, but it is too drying on my lips. I found it here too.

I am as picky with my chapsticks as I am with every other product I use. My favorite for years has been Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. I love the peppermint tingle and the hydration. Before that, for years, I used Huckleberry lip balm from Montana. So wonderful.

I like to use a balm before bed just to prevent chapped lips. As I live in a very dry climate, this is a problem for me. I am careful about wearing drying lipsticks or glosses because of this.

About a year ago, I got a .1 oz sample from Sephora with an order. It has lasted me since. I put it on most nights...and slather any extra on my finger onto my cuticles.

It is a bestseller in Japan. I am a sucker for international bestsellers. That's how I discovered Bio-Oil and Deja vu Fiberwig years ago.

I'm finally running out of this teeny tube. Two options--some small sizes for cheap on ebay, or a pack of three samples from the yu-be website here.

It's so good and in a long lasting way. It doesn't feel gooey on, but nourishes for quite some time. Try it!

Finally, five months later, I got my hair cut again. I took off three inches.

I'm also in the process of deciding on highlights. It's all very exciting, but also scary since I haven't changed my hair color in seven years. I have been very set on the super dark brown demi permanent color I use. Glossy, long lasting, and darker.

I have so many concrete things to write about...but I'm not feeling well.

And trying to figure out what to do with my hair color. Some light brown highlights to camouflage my gray. Or simply revert back to my natural brown shade, which would also camouflage. Or some Victoria Secret model style of highlights that my stylist told me about. But that would leave the roots darker still.

Hmmm, I'm also so tired of all of my purses and can't figure out what I want.

I have been wearing this one quite a bit for quick trips out.
(I've also been wearing my hair in super high, tight buns quite a bit this past month.)

But I come back to this one most springs

I keep making the mistake of buying fairly cheap purses, and the handles fray or tear. But I can't make up my mind about a longer term one.

Well, ladies, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and, therefore, this is my final blog until after Easter.

I leave you with one final product that I am obsessed with. I wrote about loose kohl eyeliners back here. Well, the one I ordered from India on eBay turned out to be a bust. It completely irritated my eyes and smeared all over.

I then purchased the L'Oreal HIP one. Let me just say that I LOVE IT. It stays in my waterline all day. Instead of "tightlining" in the eastern style, I simply press the applicator wand on my lower waterline and then squeeze my eyes shut. Voila...perfection.

Although I am a Protestant, I love observing Lent. I didn't last year as my health was in a terrible state and I was working full time. This year, I am excited to ignore all things beauty and go gluten free! We'll see how it goes!

First of all, I have been ridiculously negligent of my blog...again! And I only have a week before Lent...and ever so much to say.

Last month, I saw some beautiful threader earrings in my People Style Watch magazine. It showed Jessica Alba wearing them. However, at over $100, I knew I could find something cheaper.

Etsy and ebay have proved very helpful. I'm still trying to decide on which pair.

I love the length, dangling at three inches or over...but they are so light weight and can still be super casual. LOVE them.

I want to give something difficult up, but physically cannot give up meals as my health/energy is precarious enough with full nutrients.

I am finding all sorts of tips to use stuff we already own...and loving it.

I got this off of the Glamour beauty blog, about uses for baking soda.

Not Just For Your Fridge Anymore

I've only ever thought of that one pound vented box living in the back of my fridge absorbing all those funky food smells, but the team at Arm & Hammer taught me a few tricks that takes baking soda to a new beauty level...
Break out a new box (keep the one that's been hidden behind your milk for two months in there!) and try a few of these D.I.Y. baking soda ideas:

Add 1/2 a cup to your bath water for a soothing soak.

Mix about a quarter size amount into your regular shampoo to banish product build-up

Soak gunk-covered brushes in a basin with a teaspoon of baking soda for a hair tool detox

Chopping onions or garlic? Wash your hands with it to neutralize stinky odors

Sprinkle some in your body wash to make an instant exfoliant

Dump about half/one cup in a pair of socks, tie off with a ponytail holder, and put in your boots/gym shoes for easy odor-eaters

So I've been on an internet beauty reading binge the last couple of weeks. Sad, I know. I have no contact with my boyfriend for three weeks. I am merely four days into the three weeks. Even though we only get to see each other on weekends with the distance right now, I now see just how much we are in contact throughout each day. It's all very strange...

Anyways, I'm reading more and cooking more...but mostly playing on the internet more!

I took advantage of the Ulta Amazing Cosmetics Concealer deal, split with my friend Kim. We both got the Golden Light shade. I have never been the best applicator of makeup. I love makeup and skincare, but never seem to want to put the effort into really learning how to apply it correctly.

I have been using Benefit Erase Paste in #1 for almost a year and love its brightening effect. I have been using my finger to warm it up and then tap it onto my skin and the corners of my eyes. Well, I decided to search on YouTube for tips on applying both Erase Paste and Amazing Cosmetics concealers.

I read a great tip about using a fluffy eyeshadow crease or shading brush to tap concealer on under the eyes if you're not looking for super thick coverage. I can't stand having anything cakey or obvious looking in the way of face makeup. I tried it with the Erase Paste and I think I prefer my finger on that one. But, it works beautifully with the AC!! The perfect coverage for that area.

I happened to have a very reasonable extra eye shading brush that came in an Eco Tools set.

Face Makeup...the must of makeups

So, most people who see me on a daily basis would have no idea about my obsessions with skincare and makeup. To be honest, I am more obsessed with skincare (I am working up a little post about some goodies in that regard) if I had to choose one.

I don't know what it is about makeup that allures me. Honestly, most days (now that I don't work for Corporate America anymore) I roll out with simply some sort of face makeup, bronzer, blush, eyebrows tidied and undereye concealer applied.

I have recently been going through one of my phases of being completely discontent with my face makeup, determined to find something else to give that elusive flawless face look with minimal makeup.

Here are my current favorites:
Colorescience Pressed Mineral Pigment in "All Even"

I had been lusting after this for a while--waterproof, SPF, transfer resistant, comes in yellow-based colors...all without the messy BE loose powder. I, of course, did not pay $50 for it, but got it for half price from a seller on ebay. I love it. I have to apply it sparingly because this stuff can give some very full coverage.

Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer

Okay, so I recommended this to Anne-Marie having never tried it myself. I had read amazing reviews about it. I am usually a bit scared of concealer because I always feel like I'm making things more flaky and obvious by covering them up. I finally broke down because Ulta is having a buy one, get one free on these travel sizes. Find a friend and split the $28 price tag. So far, I'm loving mine. It stays on so well and it perfectly creamy. Now, I just have to meet up with Kim this week to give her hers.

*As a side note, mineral makeup can be used as a concealer on its own. If you're using a liquid/cream concealer, put it on before powder foundation or after liquid foundation (or tinted moisturizer, which is what I favor.)*

So I had a coupon for Ulta for $5 off. I went today and they had "Buy Two, Get One Free" on Essie and OPI polishes. The Essie deal also included a free matte top coat. I also am torn between the two brands constantly. OPI has better trendy shades, but it's a thicker texture. I love the thinness of Essie. Nail polish stays on much better if you do two thin coats. Their polishes make it easy to do that.

I have been resisting the matte trend since early summer. I myself love perfectly painted GLOSSY nails. I finally gave in with the free top coat.

So I got all of this for $11.

I have to admit that I am rethinking the Mint Candy Apple (middle.) It is crazy trendy right now. I know I seem like I am trendy, but I am definitely not. I like to keep up with knowing what they are, but I tend to mostly stick with classics or things that at least feel like me.

I used it with the matte top coat. It DOES NOT feel like me.

What do you think?? I think my grandma is going to be appalled.

Eastern style kahal/kohl eyeliners. I randomly read about Guerlain Terracotta Loose Powder Kohl Liner. It's a loose kohl that you apply to your waterline, close your eye, and swipe it across your eye--giving a tight, intense line all the way around your inner lids.

Ok, so I have serious issues. I have always been a bit of a picker in regards to ingrown hairs, or facial blemishes. Over the last couple of years, it has steadily grown to be a bit of a sickness. Aaron gets so mad at me for going to town on a small blackhead--which then turns into a massive underground cystic pimple...which then turns into a massive scab after I have squeezed it. Then, I have a huge scab which turns into a huge scar.

It's so bad, and yet I keep doing it!

I've tried to tell myself to stop it. The original goal was that I wasn't going to pick for the three weeks before the ball. Well, I fell off the wagon approximately every other day.

When I told Aaron, he asked "When were you ever on the wagon???"

True.

Well, I did the same thing this week. It's so bad that the three year old I nanny for has been very concerned about the boo boo on my face. Also, my niece asked about my "poor little owie" on my chin.

Now I have a HUGE scab right in the middle of my chin...prompting me to make a new commitment. I will not pick for the rest of the year. If I succeed in purging the puss of this terrible addiction from my life, I will reward myself with this:

Well, I finally recovered from the ball just in time for an insane Thanksgiving week. I have had so many beauty and fashion things running through this little head, but have been too tired to write them down! My two year old niece stayed here for six days. I was her primary caregiver last weekend. Wowza...not ready for kids yet. It was fun, and I missed her as soon as she left, but WOW.

I have been suckered into three Sephora Sweet Steals already. Have you guys discovered these???

First, I was buying those lipliners I wrote about a few weeks ago when I glanced at the set of TWO Benefit creaseless eyeshadows for $10. No, I am not kidding. They are ordinarily $19. Now, I wasn't going to buy them unless I really liked the color. I have been SO impressed with the staying power.

Recess - a great, yellowy base. I have been using it under gray shadow and it lasts as long as Urban Decay primer potion!! I can also use it as a brow highlighter.

Honey Bunny - a neutral, beigey brown. Amazing on its own. Completely matte.

So, tonight I stopped by to return this Benefit powder and scored again. Frederick Fekkai Salon Glaze mini bottle for $5. Woohoo.

Target Has E.L.F.!!!!

So I was breezing through Target yesterday and I discovered they carry E.L.F. in there now. I love me so makeup that is decent quality for $1. I got the waterproof eyeliner. It's a very fine-tipped felt pen. It isn't very pigmented and I found it a bit dry. I like a nice, thick black line on top when I do liquid. This I just thought of as a longer lasting pencil liner. It stayed put pretty well all day. It didn't smudge, but sort of evaporated (I guess that's the best way to describe it.)

In other news, Target has an entire wall of knee-high and thigh-high socks. LOVE. I bought a blocked black/gray/white pair of thigh-highs. Yes, I know they sound ridiculously uncomfortable. Wrong. They are wonderful. So warm and comfy.

I finally have everything together for the ball. My sister-in-law loaned me this bridesmaid dress. I love it!

The only things I have had to buy are jewelry, fashion tape to ensure the dress doesn't fall down in the back, heel grips for some shoes I had and some red lipstick.

As a side note, I got this red lipstick for $2! I got a birthday coupon from Victoria's Secret for $10 off a purchase. I really like their lipsticks and glosses. The $12 lipstick was only $2. Ah, the satisfaction of a great deal.

Ok, so I've been really wanting to create a better nude and pale pink lip. I tried buying a lipstick, tried using concealer on lips like I've read...but short of actually wearing a lipstick, nothing has really worked.

Back when I was in 8th grade, I wore Wet'n'Wild #666 lip liner under Carmex--just like all of my friends. I recently busted out my MAC Spice (cult favorite liner) and layered it under some Burt's Bees chapstick. I loved the look, and it reminded me of my junior high days.

I have been wanting to try the Cover Girl lipstain since I really like my Styli Style one, but all the reviews say that they all come out bright. I wanted a really pale lip.

Well, today I headed to Sephora and bought two Sephora liners. They are $5 each. I am SOOOOO pleased with my selections that I fully recommend them to you. You get to try them on in person, and they are cheaper than most drugstore options.

David Babaii Bohemian Beach Spray Review

For about a year, I have been reading rave reviews about this spray. I finally decided to try it, as I'm running low on the Sunsilk Waves of Envy Spray that I wrote about last year. I love the oils and conditioners in that stuff.

Anyways, I purposely bought the David Babaii at Rite Aid since they have a return policy. The pros: that stuff smells AMAZING. I love the fragrant oils in it, but the sea salt counteracted that for me. My hair isn't normally super frizzy, but this just created frizz for me.

I think I'll stick with my Sunsilk, and save my $10 to go toward the Moroccan oil I want so badly!

Sorry for the lack of shallow information lately! I had a special visitor, and then was on vacation for a week without computer access.

I am going to be writing about my ideas for my gown/makeup/hair for the Marine Ball in November.

In the meantime, I did a bit of birthday shopping...early. This trench my aunt got me--the absolute perfect fall jacket. I'm loving it. The boots the boyfriend is getting me for my birthday. I have been looking for the perfect black equestrian boots for a few winters now. Last winter, I ordered some rubber ones from Urban Outfitters, but ended up returning them. I have searched online, and tried on many pairs whenever I happen to be shopping. I went to outlets with my aunt, mom and sister-in-law and found some good ones on sale at Gap. They were suede, however, and weren't well made. I was perfectly content with them until my SIL saw these ones at Anne Klein of all places...and I knew they were THE ONES.

Looks I Want to Be Able to Pull Off

I am in love with all of the red and pink lips going on this season. This look is so difficult for me to pull off. First, because I don't usually wear dark lips...I'm more of a balm/gloss kind of girl. Second, I hate anything that looks trying-too-hard. Third, my lips are so freaking dry that most regular lipsticks flake off me.

However, I want to find some sort of balm or super moisturizing lip color with extra pigments. That, or here are a couple of ideas I have to pull off these lip looks.

Get a little tube of Aquaphor that everyone raves about, and use it every night before bed to keep the dry lips away.

Use sugar, a toothbrush or washcloth to regularly exfoliate my lips before applying a darker lip color.

Use my little-used red or fuscia lipsticks as stains. Instead of painting on the color, use a finger to smudge the color on the lips. Blot with a tissue to stain, and apply a little balm on.

On a splurge note, I found out I'm going to the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball at Camp Pendleton with the boyfriend in November. I think I can re-use a dress I have and dazzled heels, so might splurge on one of these new Bobbi Brown Rich Color Gloss--a full color lipstick, balm and gloss in one! Check out the hot red in this video...it could be my ball color!

I'm FINALLY feeling a little better...woohoo! I can deal with my constant fatigue, but not the full body misery that I have dealt with for the past month.

Anyways, in my free time, I've been playing on YouTube still with tutorial videos. As I've said before, I struggle with staying power of powder eyeliner. This video was SO exhaustive...covering all types of eyeliner. It's a bit long, but if you need a refresher course on eyeliner, this is for you! I learned so much.

Even though I love makeup, I'm not particularly adept at applying it. I guess I don't like to wear too much at one time. I prefer more subtle makeup, and really good skincare. Still, I love a lined eye and really enjoyed this video.

I cannot believe that I spent about four hours online today...mostly watching YouTube makeup tutorials!! Then, researching prices and reviews for products. I'm insane. My eyes are bleary. I wanted to see the last set of the Men's US Open final, and so was killing time watching the first four sets that I had already seen. I know, it makes no sense whatsoever. I'm insane.

It was extremely informative. However, I started to lust after every product some girl raved about (such as retrying Benefit Benetint, and getting Benefit Glamazon.) Then, I changed my tactics. I started searching for products I already owned to find better ways to use them. JACKPOT!!

Most of you know about my love for Bobbi Brown gel liners. I have been using it for a year and a half (though not everyday because I'm too lazy for the brush most days!) I watched a few tutorials and really liked this one. It's short and really helpful!

Asian Eyes

This post is for my friend Sona. She is full Korean. I myself am a quarter Korean, and even then have some distinctive Asian issues (short, straight lashes; oily eyelids and a heart-shaped face.) So, I feel free to make this a very racist post...melding all Asians into one. Now I'm completely aware that Lucy Liu is Chinese, but we can take some good tips from her.

The godsend for any Asian girl is a good lengthening mascara that will hold a curl/crimp really well. I have many times talked about my Holy Grail of Imju Fiberwig, the best selling mascara in Japan for a reason! I have blogged about it here and here.

Now, I am very picky about how I apply my mascara...big surprise, I know.
1. Only apply eyeliner on the top lid before putting on mascara if it is gel or liquid and has had ample time to dry completely!
2. Get a really good curler...it makes a huge difference. I myself prefer the famous Shu Uemura, but I've heard many Asian girls rave about Shiseido's curler.
3. If you have really stubborn, straight lashes, heat your curler with your blow dryer on low for 5-10 seconds before using it.
4. Getting as close to the base of the lashes as possible, firmly crimp in only one spot. If you have short, straight lashes, IGNORE EVERYTHING YOU'VE EVER HEARD ABOUT CURLING IN THREE DIFFERENT SPOTS. THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU.
5. Quickly apply the Fiberwig, wiggling slightly at the base of the lash and using the end of the wand to add fibers onto the ends of the lashes. (I need to do a pictorial of this, but am too lazy right now and am waiting for the US Open to continue after the all day rain delay.)
6. At this point, if you are using a pencil liner (preferably over an eyelid primer such as Urban Decay Primer Potion.), use a firm/flat brush to wriggle it into the base of the lashes and extend up as high as you want the line to go.
7. Wait for the amazing mascara to dry and crimp the eyelashes again with the curler. My short, stubby lashes stand straight up ALL day. I keep a cheapy Revlon curler in my car to do on my way somewhere.

As for liner, Sona is already incredibly and naturally beautiful (as well as being the mother of three adorably girly girls.) I have read Lucy rave about a simple neutral eye color and a crisp line of liquid liner.

I would suggest Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin. I've written about it here.

Secondly, a liquid eyeliner she can EASILY use on her top lashes and--for a more dramatic, glam look--in her lower waterline. I think it would look stunning. I haven't gotten over to MAC to try it, but have been reading rave reviews on Makeup Alley about MAC Liquidlast. Read more here.

I am loving all the statement jewelry that makes the simplest outfit memorable and pulled together. However, I also am hesitant to spend alot of money on a trendy look. So, I love getting accessories from Forever 21 or Wet Seal. I have gotten a few really cute hats, sunglasses and jewelry from Wet Seal. Most recently, this necklace.

I think the secret to getting great accessories for cheap is the metal. I have scrimped and bought a cheap gold colored necklace before, only to have it tarnish within days. Silver is usually better in the cheap stores...the more matte the finish, the better. This necklace is very delicate and looks much more expensive than its $10.

I am loving purple. Actually my love affair began last summer with a beautiful, matte dark purple polish. Hold on, it was the one I wore the day I started this blog!! It continued on to fun tops last summer in purple, and into a gorgeous fall color in OPI's Le France line, Parlez Vous OPI?

Well, it's even hotter this fall.

We have new eyeliners.
This is supposed to be in a purple color in stores now. I have read raving reviews of the staying power of this pencil liner. However, maybe I just have oily eye areas, but I need a gel or liquid to really stay put.

Also, Make Up For Ever always has fun colors.

I personally love liquid liner for a quick-yet-dramatic look. Today, at Nordstrom Rack, I saw some dark amethyst liquid liner and I'm thinking I need to go back and spend the $5 to revamp my fall makeup.

Stella & Dot

My friend Amy just became a stylist for Stella & Dot. You know how you get invited to jewelry or tupperware parties and don't really want anything? Well, this stuff is SUPER cute. It's a bit on the pricey side, but the pieces are so well made.

I have my eye on these charm necklaces...a silver chain with two gold and one silver charms. I would choose the heal charm, a "K" and my birthstone.

I also LOVE this bracelet.

I would wear it on my watch wrist to contrast my silver watch. I love mixing my metals! (within reason, of course.)

I love accessories because I prefer to wear simple, classic clothes...and update easily with fun jewelry.

Blend those colors

I started wearing bronzer all over my face a few years ago when I got vigilant about wearing sunscreen on my face. My bronzer of choice for this is Bare Minerals Warmth or Faux Tan (as I've mentioned here and here.) I love that they are mineral and don't clog pores, and I can use a tiny bit to give color on my forehead, nose, cheeks and blend into my jaw and neck.

YES, ladies...the neck is generally the lightest part of your upper body!! I learned this trick when I saw myself in pictures with my lightly faux bronzed face and stark white neck. It was shocking. It has since become a pet peeve of mine, and I notice it in my celebrities' photos as well.

If you are a faux bronzer, bronze your neck!

Moroccan Oil

Wowza, this stuff is amazing. I kept seeing it raved about everywhere, but figured I didn't need another oil. I am already obsessed with Tahitian Monoi oil, Bio-Oil and Jojoba oil!

I stayed with Laura last week and she told me to try this Moroccan Oil. WOW. For her, it's taken the place of serum or Frederick Fekkai Glossing Cream (my drug of choice.) My hair is already pretty shiny, but I would never use FF on second day dry hair...for fear it would feel dirty or greasy. I used the oil on my hair the second day...NO oiliness, no dirty feel. It seriously restyled my hair. I love it.

The smallest size is $14.99. I may wait until I finish my jumbo tube of FF to purchase, but may break down and buy the small one...if I can find it with free shipping.

Target Sort-of Finds

So, a couple of weeks ago, I enjoyed my new endless amount of free time to saunter on over to Target. I ended up trying on a huge stack of clothes--something I haven't done in so long as it takes so much energy! I loved so many of the Converse line. Out of all of these, I only ended up purchasing the white sailor shorts. In the Fresno heat, I have worn them quite a bit.

I really like the seersucker dress, but it was just too wrinkly. I hate ironing, and know that I would end up never wearing it.

Still, I had fun...

Clarifying Shampoos

I am a huge fan of deep cleansing--whether it's body, face, hair. I love the idea of stripping away the build up and starting fresh.

I steam my face over boiling water, apply a purifying mask. I use a mineral salt purifying body cleanser every once in a while. And I use a clarifying shampoo once a week.

Not only do you strip away the product build up, but it's the perfect time to apply a deep conditioner...penetrates more easily on that clean hair. It used to be that the clarifying shampoos were too harsh for color treated hair, but gone are those days.

Mad Men Season Three premieres tonight and I am SUPER excited. How long have I been a "Maddict"? (Seriously, that's what the fans call themselves.) Well, I watched my first episode this past week. Luckily, in this beautiful time I am calling my summer break, I watched both seasons one and two...and am obsessed.

With all the smut of adultery and copious amounts of alcohol and cigarettes, I am most impressed by the curvy women. I love the difference from today's standards. It was so much more natural. Take a look:

Greek Sandals

I come back, wearing my ever so authentic Greek sandals. They are handmade, and came in a cute little handmade bag...all for 15 Euro! My friend has had hers for over ten years! You season them with olive oil, and can darken them with water. I, however, prefer the nude color...which I'm told is very Italian (and the telltale sign of a tourist in Greece.)

I'm wearing them nonstop.

I'm Baaaack

I had a fab trip...super relaxing and a time to not worry about makeup or skin products. I actually could only take carry on luggage to Greece, so very few liquids and clothes. It was really good for me. I'm generally a pretty light packer...except for vast quantities of toiletries. This way, I had to be super low maintenance.

And since I'm not working this month either, I don't wear any makeup most days. Ah, bliss.

However, I did notice some really cute trends over there, and great LOW MAI hair ideas. And gained a huge appreciation for the Greeks and their lack of body consciousness issues. Everyone was just so confident with their flaws. I loved it.

I totally forgot to post these before I left. Here's how I did my toes for the trip:
I used Essie "Jazz", my absolute favorite taupe. It is my current love for my toes and very hot this season.

I actually got three Essie nail polishes last month at Ulta for $11! How, you ask? Well, they were having "buy two, get one free" and I had a $5 coupon. Steal.

I'm Off to England and Greece

I wanted to get a fun new hat at Wet Seal the other day, and dragged my aunt and cousin in with me when we left the theater after seeing "Ice Age."

It was a successful trip. I got a fun gray hat, and we all got $3 sunglasses. I happen to be really happy with mine.

While I have had my eye on Ray Ban aviators for about two years now, I have decided that I am pretty rough with my sunglasses. I like being able to toss them in my purse or car, and not worry about protecting my investment.

I love that they're off white.

T.J. Maxx

I got a few very fun things from T.J. Maxx the other day. I forced my sickly body out of bed to go to Target for a few trip things. I had seen a mini, dual voltage flat iron in the Maxx a month or so ago, so stopped in.

I got the flat iron for my bangs on my trip. It was only $16 and so awesome that it is dual voltage! We'll see if I actually use it, or just clip them back and wear hats the whole time.

I found my second favorite self tanner that is no longer sold at Sephora, ModelCo Translucent Airbrush Tanner. I used to pay about $25 for it. Well, $7 at the Maxx! I love the smell of it.

Lastly, I got the little blue ruffly clutch on a whim. It was sitting on the end of a row...for $5. It'll be handy in London.

Simple Smoky Eye

I was bored the other day, entertaining my 6 month old nephew. I decided, with an otherwise makeup-less face, to do a simple smoky eye. I used a kohl eyeliner (an old L'Oreal one I had) and a black eyeshadow. I smudged the kohl all the way around my eye, and on the inner lashes. Then, used the black shadow to smudge it out a bit. I topped it off with MAC Shroom on my browbone and inner corners of my eyes.

I didn't prep with any Urban Decay Primer Potion...and it smeared within fifteen minutes.

Oh well....

New Fave Tinted Moisturizer

Aveeno Positively Radiant TM SPF30

First of all, sorry for the hiatus! Last week was my last week of work for a bit and I was SO exhausted. Then, my niece and nephew have been at my house and I have been having a blast NOT working and hanging with them. I have barely been on the computer, which--if you know me--is a small miracle!

Anyways, over the past year, I have tested many tinted moisturizers. I have done everything from Stila's regular (too oily) and oil-free (too chalky), to CoverGirl (too beigy and clogged my nose pores), to Cosmedicine matte (terrible finish), to Benefit (too oily and limited colors), etc.

Two that I'm really loving are Shiseido and Aveeno. The huge difference is in price. S is $37 and A I got for $13. I've decided to take some time off from work for my health, and with my big Euro trip...I am into saving the money.

S is not oil-free, but sinks in so quickly. It is extremely subtle.

A is oil-free, is supposed to even skin tone over time, and really gives incredible coverage. As usual for me, I have to really blend into my chin or it flakes (side effect of regularly using Benzoyl Peroxide.) I am really impressed by it. I have really fair face skin, and went with the darker of the two shades. I would suggest getting it at Target, unless it's on sale at a drugstore. Otherwise, it was regularly $17--way too pricey for drugstore brand in my opinion.

I have loved the coverage so much that I haven't even been wearing mineral makeup over. A little powder and I'm good to go.

Adult Acne Glycolic Peel

Somehow I stopped using this as much during the drier winter. A few weeks ago, I eased back into it almost every other day and...wow, what a difference in my skin. It is smoother, clearer and brighter.

Still a miracle worker--a discontinued miracle worker. I got a few boxes at Marshall's last fall.

I love the combination of glycolic and salicylic acid in it. Works wonders.

Natural Highlights

My hair is getting more and more gray strands!

This summer, I'm thinking about letting my natural sun highlights come in, rather than dyeing it with a darker (albeit demi permanent) brown.

I got this from Glamour and may try it...while lying out on the beach in Greece next month!

Bacne

Summer's on its way...meaning more sweat. No other way to say it. Sweat can clog pores, and cause bacne (body acne.) This product isn't specifically made for bacne, but I'm really liking it. It helps fade scars in addition to preventing the bacne. I'm all about preventing breakouts on both my face and back. So far, this does the trick. The product I used to use was discontinued.

If you have a big breakout of bacne, try using a toner as well twice a day (something with salicylic acid, to unclog pores.) I highly recommend my favorite toner--for face, fading scars, body or ingrown hairs. It's amazing!
